Music by John Barry cover Lulu 2022

Our Redcliffe published book "Music by John Barry" sold out in four months, and there are currently no plans for a re-print. However, we have made available a print-on-demand version, which has identical internal content. The only difference between the two being the absence  of a dust-jacket for the print-on-demand version.

Details:

The five-hundred page book, fully-illustrated (often with rarely seen images), consists of a chronological exploration of key landmarks underpinning John Barry's illustrious career. Written in the form of extensively researched essays concentrating on one specific score, over forty  are represented, from the first, Beat Girl, to the last, Enigma. Whether highly acclaimed or lower key films, each chapter sets out, clearly and accurately, the circumstances surrounding the inception and completion of the score under scrutiny and in doing so, provides  fresh insights into John Barry's remarkable legacy.

Ordering information:

The book can be ordered from the Lulu.com shop:

"In the late 1960s and early 70s, John Barry was at his creative peak, writing both his greatest Bond music for On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and the score for the Oscar-winning Midnight Cowboy within a few months of each other. As one decade melted into the next, Barry would provide a host of haunting, highly atmospheric scores: The Appointment, Deadfall, Mary Queen Of Scots, Follow Follow, with possibly his finest ever saved for Nicolas Roeg’s masterpiece Walkabout. He also found time to write the deathless theme for TV series The Persuaders.

“The More Things Change” collects Barry’s finest work from this period, including the whole of 1970’s classic “Ready When You Are, J.B.” album, released on CD for the very first time. In addition, it collects loose ends from the period (including selections from 1968’s lost Richard Lester classic Petulia), then follows Barry into the early 70s.

It has been compiled by music writer and John Barry superfan Bob Stanley, with extensive sleeve notes and a gorgeous selection of ephemera."

You can order the CD from the Ace Records website.

ZULU1From the Quartet Records website:

Quartet Records presents a completely restored, remastered, slightly expanded edition of the magnificent score by John Barry (THUNDERBALL, THE LAST VALLEY, BODY HEAT, OUT OF AFRICA) for Cy Enfield’s classic epic ZULU (1964), starring Stanley Baker, Jack Hawkins, Lilla Jacobsson and Michael Caine. The film is about the Battle of Rorke’s Drift, an heroic moment for the British army in the aftermath of a massacre that had occurred just hours earlier at nearby Isandlwana, a British outpost near the Natal-Zululand border in eastern South Africa.

For one of his earliest blockbuster efforts for the big screen, John Barry provided an exemplary score based on a single theme, introduced in the opening title sequence, with stirring brass and powerful percussion figures. Despite being a 138-minute epic, the film contains no more than 20 minutes of original music, carefully spotted and cleverly scored. For the album released by Ember Records in 1964, Barry decided to include practically the entire underscore on Side A, augmenting it with six contemporary songs and arrangements on Side B. Barry turned his main Zulu theme into “Monkey Feathers,” with electric guitar and some exotic-sounding piccolo, and one of the Zulu wedding songs, heard during the early part of the film, into “Zulu Stamp.”

ZULU2The successful original album, released by Ember in the UK and United Artists Records in the USA, has been reissued multiple times on LP and CD. Interestingly, the stereo and mono versions of the LP present alternate mixes and even different takes of many cues. For this new Quartet release, we have included both versions from first-generation album masters provided by Cherry Red Records from the Ember Records vaults, all painstakingly remixed, restored, assembled and mastered by Chris Malone. Also, after an extensive search through the film’s many different owners through the years, we were able to find (thanks to Paramount Pictures) a D/M/E track from which we can offer the Main and End Titles without Richard Burton’s narration, as well as one minute of original Barry music not included in the Ember album.

The lavishly designed full-color 24-page booklet includes an in-depth essay by film music writer and Barry expert Jon Burlingame.

La-La Land Records, Universal Pictures, and Geffen proudly present a Limited Edition remastered and expanded CD reissue of renowned composer John Barry’s (GOLDFINGER, OUT OF AFRICA, DANCES WITH WOLVES) original motion picture score to the beloved 1980 big screen romantic fantasy-drama SOMEWHERE IN TIME, directed by Jeannot Szwarc and starring Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour and Christopher Plummer. Barry’s rich, gorgeous orchestral score perfectly embodies this heartfelt and heartbreaking romantic classic, enriching it with a resonating melodic and thematic timelessness that is vital to the film’s powerful sentimental allure. As the director himself states, “John’s music gave the film everything it needed. I still think it’s his most beautiful score – and one of the most beautiful scores in the history of film.”

Produced, mastered and edited from studio vault elements by Mike Matessino, this expanded CD is limited to 5000 units and features never-before-released score cues and additional music, including the music box arrangement of Rachmaninoff Rhapsody, Barry’s original music for Elise’s stage show, two previously unheard arrangements of the Somewhere In Time theme, and more! The exclusive, in depth liner notes are by journalist and author Jon Burlingame and the timeless art design is by Jim Titus.

Tommy Pearson's new John Barry Project

Broadcaster and concert producer Tommy Pearson has revealed via Facebook that he is currently working on a new double CD of John Barry music:

"So proud and excited that a project I've been working on for the last few months with my dear friend Pirmin Zängerle has finally - at the 3rd attempt (thanks to Covid) - started recording!

A new double-CD of music by John Barry, played by the City Light Symphony Orchestra and Anthony Gabriele in the fabulous acoustic of the KKL, Lucerne.

I am co-producing the CD with Pirmin and I edited, digitised and prepared the vast majority of the music with final prep done by the amazing Lillie Harris. Acres of fabulous music, of course, mostly taken from the JB originals plus orchestrations/arrangements via Nick Dodd and Nic Raine. Liner notes will be by Jon Burlingame and there will be a special introduction written by Laurie Barry.

We are also recording some extra James Bond tracks by the 'other' Bond composers, including David Arnold, Marvin Hamlisch, Michael Kamen and John Altman that will be available as download extras.

I'm gutted that I can't actually be at the sessions (because of Covid restrictions, of course). But everything is in the best hands."

Pure Desmond Plays James Bond Songs

pure desmond plays james bond songs 250
