We understand the forthcoming DVD release of Mary, Queen of Scots (see our our DVD page) will include an isolated music track.

During the parts of the film without music, film music writer Jon Burlingame will host a discussion with as yet unknown members of the crew. He has done this successfully on the recent releases of the Sand Pebbles and Von Ryan's Express, which also have isolated music tracks.

The John Barry 4CD set - "Themependium" has now been released in the UK.

All but two of the one-hundred tracks (The Last Valley & Raise The Titanic) are by John Barry with his Seven or Orchestra.

A few tracks, particularly on CD4, are Barry's own re-recordings, not the original soundtrack versions.

Following the postponement last year we are pleased to announce that the two John Barry projects are now back in the record company's schedules.

The "Best of" compilation is set for a March 2007 release and the box-set probably a month or so later.

Once we have full details of all the tracks we will post the details here - assuming, of course, we get permission!

The "best of" CD probably won't have any surprises for the dedicated fan, but it will be a rare opportunity for a cross-label compilation.

On the other hand, the box-set should contain some rarities (on CD) though with licensing still taking place, nothing can be certain.

Just an update to inform everybody that the book is finished, certainly as far as the text is concerned. It's just a question of negotiating the use of a few photos before we can turn it over to a publisher. So hopefully, the book will be available at the start of UK summer.

It's possible sales will be restricted to on-line purchasing, either direct from ourselves, or via reputable sites such as Amazon, FSM etc. The main reason for this should suit us all. If we leave out the middle-men, i.e. wholesalers and distributors, we have a far greater chance of recouping our costs. Also, retailers like Virgin & W.H. Smiths insist on a massive discount of around 40% before they will even consider stocking your book. It didn't happen in the end, but we worked out if Virgin had bought the 50 copies they were considering, we would have made £1 a book!

If we can sell enough copies direct to the fans, we can afford to charge less for the book! So it all makes perfect sense.

10 new Walt Disney Records titles are being uploaded to iTunes.
Amongst them – JAN 16 2007

1. The Black Hole Soundtrack - NOT PREVIOUSLY AVAILABLE

According to Randy Thornton (producer of numerous Disney film score and theme park releases), Barry's THE BLACK HOLE will be included in the next batch of iTunes-only releases from Walt Disney Records coming 1/16.

He also provides some insight into the original digital recording and subsequent transfer for iTunes:

"Now before someone cries foul, I will explain the status of "The Black Hole Soundtrack". Though this was the first digitally recorded soundtrack, the digital technology of 1979 is not compatible with digital technology of today (or even 1982 when CD's were introduced). This soundtrack was recorded with 4bit resolution at 32kHz sampling, thus making a pure digital release not only impossible, but any attempt to upsample or convert them would result in a recording far worse than the analog conversion that was done at the time. The reason it has taken me so long to get this soundtrack re-released is that I wanted to make absolutely sure that there was no way I could use the original digital recordings. I also couldn't include more of John Barry's score than was originally released - as the album, as it stands, is all that was legally cleared for release. I did, however, hunt down the original analog transfer from 1979, digitally transferred and restored at 24/96 and re-created the album's original content. I know some of you more 'passionate' will still be disappointed, but there is nothing more anyone could do. Still, even at the iTunes 128kbs compression, the album has never sounded better!"

Thanks to Doug Lacey for the information.
