We are very grateful to Mark Jensen for alerting us to a brief interview with John which appears on the website of Rules Restaurant, one of John's favourite London haunts.

It was evidently carried out just before the Oscars in 1991, as John's nomination for Dances with Wolves is mentioned. JB is featured from approx. 4m 55s to 6m 35s.

From Intrada press release:
Label: Disney / Intrada D001383402
(55:05) Wow! You thought it would never happen! World premiere release of complete John Barry score for 1979 Walt Disney sci-fi tale with Anthony Perkins, Maximilian Schell, Ernest Borgnine, directed by Gary Nelson. Spectacular CD production, co-branded by Walt Disney Records & Intrada, offers every note of Barry's oft-requested score in stunning digital stereo from 32-track digital masters vaulted at Disney. Original LP offered 30 minutes of scoring highlights but new CD has every LP selection plus over 20 minutes of never-before released material, all newly mastered in true digital audio, playing in picture sequence! Exciting overture, swirling main title motifs are memorable but equally fun are numerous devices literally spotlighting favorite signatures of composer: melodic ideas played in one register by French horns, then another register by trumpets; massive block minor chords for suspense; repeating rhythmic ideas generating action; many other musical trademarks. Lengthy history of bringing complete score to CD, location of long-obsolete digital machines, creation of all-new digital mixes plus more info all notated in fascinating detail by producer Randy Thornton. But there's more! Original campaign artwork, production stills, full color shots of composer at recording sessions plus generous notes on film & scoring by Jeff Bond add more icing to sweet cake. A legendary soundtrack album now gets the "Special Edition" treatment at last! John Barry conducts.

Intrada clues for their 23rd August new release obviously point to an expanded edition of The Black Hole, one of the most requested Barry soundtracks, which has never been officially released on CD.

Regretfully we only found out today about John Barry's Golden Touch, part of Behind the Screen with BAFTA / Film4 Summer Screen, which takes place at Somerset House, London, on 28th July:

"The late John Barry is undoubtedly one of cinema’s greatest composers. Well known for his outstanding, brand-defining scores for the Bond series from Dr. No through The Living Daylights, he also wrote the music for countless other major features: Petulia, The Lion in Winter, Walkabout, Midnight Cowboy, Out of Africa, Body Heat, among them. Over the years, he received 5 Oscars, a BAFTA and 4 Grammys awards, an amazing record which also reflects the high regard in which he was held by the industry. In this event, Composer Miguel Mera will lead several of Barry’s musical sons and daughters through a rich array of his spectacular scores to celebrate his particularly golden touch."

Unfortunately the event is already sold out, as is the film it accompanies later that evening, The Spy Who Loved Me.

It's a pity BAFTA didn't tells us about the event earlier since we could have ensured the real John Barry fans got the opportunity to attend the talk. We could also have pointed out that the film they've chosen has no music by John Barry!

Starting next Tuesday, July 12 at 1 pm PST La La Land Records starts shipping:

THE GOLDEN CHILD
LLLCD 1180
Music by Michel Colombier and John Barry
3 Disc Set
Limited Edition of 5000 units
Retail Price: $29.98

Produced by Lukas Kendall
Mastered by Mike Matessino
Liner Notes by Jon Burlingame
Art Direction by Jim Titus

This massive 3 disc set features both scores for the film -- Barry's mostly rejected score as well as Colombier's score used for the film. Barry fans are in for a treat. His score to this Eddie Murphy flick is one of the finest he ever wrote. It's like his lost Bond score by way of Somewhere in Time.

Before we forget to mention it: The JB memorial concert (RAH) is being broadcast on BBC radio 2 - Friday 1st July at 20:00 BST: Friday Night is Music Night. " Sir Michael Parkinson introduces a memorial concert to celebrate the life of composer John Barry, which was recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in June."
"... as well as tributes from Don Black, Sir Michael Caine, Timothy Dalton, Sir George Martin, and Sir Tim Rice." No, Sir Tim did not do a tribute.
Or listen (again for a whole week) online.

By the way the TV cameras in the hall were there only for the internal TV circuit shown on the large screen - or so said the main cameraman.
